Apple released iOS 17.4.1 on Thursday, a mere fortnight after rolling out iOS 17.4. The previous update introduced notable features like Stolen Device Protection and Podcasts transcripts.
However, this new 17.4.1 version primarily focuses on security enhancements and bug fixes. Users can download it by going to Settings > General > Software Update and tapping Update Now. Notably, Apple recommends this update for all users due to its significant bug fixes and security upgrades.
On the update page, Apple states, “This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.”
That said, Apple has not yet disclosed specifics on the issues addressed. Typically, the company publishes release notes and Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) entries post-update. However, this information is currently unavailable, though Apple mentioned notes are “coming soon.”
The update rollout covers a wide range of compatible devices. It is available for all iPhones from iPhone XS and later models. The update size could range from 350MB to 450MB, depending on the device.
Additionally, Apple is releasing iPadOS 17.4.1 for iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and newer, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later models. Furthermore, it extends to iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and newer, and iPad mini 5th generation and beyond.
Moreover, older iPhones and iPads are receiving iOS 16.7.7 and iPadOS 16.7.7 updates respectively. Specifically, the iOS 16.7.7 targets iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. Whereas, the iPadOS 16.7.7 covers iPad 5th generation, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st generation models.
Though light on new features, this rapid update underscores Apple’s commitment to continually improving security and stability across its device ecosystem. Users would be wise to update promptly for enhanced protection.
