Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is calling for a change of heart within the Ethereum ecosystem. Speaking at ETH Global’s Pragma London event on March 14th, Buterin emphasized the need for a mindset shift towards layer-2 (L2) solutions to achieve mainstream adoption and global impact.

His comments come after the successful completion of the Dencun hard fork, a network upgrade designed to improve scalability for L2 rollups.  These rollups essentially bundle transactions together before submitting them to the Ethereum blockchain, significantly reducing costs associated with using the network.

Buterin believes the Ethereum community needs to move beyond focusing solely on the base layer and prioritize the development of a robust L2 ecosystem. This shift is crucial for Ethereum to compete with traditional financial systems and significantly impact the wider internet.

While Ethereum has seen significant growth and innovation in recent years, it has also faced challenges with scalability and transaction fees. L2 solutions offer a promising path forward by processing transactions off-chain before securely settling them on the Ethereum mainnet.

By advocating for a focus on L2, Buterin highlights the importance of scalability as a key factor for Ethereum’s future success. If the Ethereum ecosystem embraces L2 solutions, it can potentially offer faster transaction times, lower fees, and, ultimately, wider user adoption.
