Yelp announced the launch of its new AI-powered assistant today. This chatbot, dubbed “Yelp Assistant,” leverages a combination of OpenAI’s large language models and Yelp’s extensive business data to connect users with the perfect professional for their needs.

Accessible through the “Projects” tab within the Yelp app (initially on iOS with an Android rollout planned later this year), Yelp Assistant utilizes a conversational approach. By asking users questions about their specific requirements, the AI assistant can pinpoint the most relevant service providers, from plumbers to painters to personal trainers.

Yelp Assistant doesn’t stop at recommendations. It can also facilitate initial contact, allowing users to schedule appointments or request quotes directly through the chat interface. This simplifies the traditionally cumbersome process of researching and contacting local businesses, saving users valuable time and effort.

Craig Saldanha, Yelp’s Chief Product Officer, emphasized the transformative potential of this AI integration. “Yelp Assistant is a game-changer,” he remarked in a statement. “It removes the friction from finding the right service professional, benefitting both consumers and businesses.” By streamlining the hiring process, Yelp Assistant empowers users to make informed decisions while simultaneously providing valuable leads to local service providers.

While the current iteration focuses on facilitating connections, future updates promise an even more personalized experience. Yelp anticipates integrating features like recommended service checklists and personalized business suggestions based on user preferences. This move positions Yelp as a one-stop shop for all local service needs, from initial search to project completion.

The arrival of Yelp Assistant signifies a significant evolution in the way people connect with local businesses. By leveraging the power of AI, Yelp is poised to become an even more essential tool for consumers navigating the vast landscape of local services.
