The highly regarded research scientist Andrej Karpathy announced his departure from OpenAI today. Karpathy has now departed the leading AI company twice, and he stated that there was no particular incident, problem, or drama that led to his resignation.
In 2017, Karpathy, an original member of OpenAI, departed the firm to become a Tesla employee. He oversaw the autopilot team at Tesla before leaving the company in 2022, and he returned to OpenAI about a year ago. Karpathy has amassed a sizable fan base on YouTube and social media as a result of his insightful YouTube videos and thought-provoking articles about the emerging field.
“Hi everyone, indeed, yesterday I departed from OpenAI. First of all, nothing “happened” and it wasn’t caused by any specific incident, problem, or drama (but conspiracy theories are still very interesting, so please keep them coming:)),” Karpathy stated.
“It’s true that working at OpenAI has been fantastic for the past year or so. The team is amazing, the individuals are lovely, and the roadmap is full of interesting things for all of us to look forward to. Working on personal projects is my immediate plan, and we’ll see where that gets us. Those of you who have been following me for some time would already be aware of what it might entail.

The Information was the first to reveal Kartphaty’s departure. It comes after a turbulent year at OpenAI when Sam Altman was momentarily removed as CEO before returning in a week of intense controversy. the business that Karpathy’s responsibilities were passed to an unnamed researcher.
“Andrej is leaving to work on personal endeavors. We appreciate his contributions and send him our warmest wishes. His duties have been transferred to a senior researcher who collaborated closely with Andrej, according to a statement from a representative.
Karpathy was working on a project at OpenAI that involved AI assistants, according to his now-changed X bio, which said, “building kind of a J.A.R.V.I.S.”
He explained his reasoning for writing this earlier in the year. He declared his intention to create a phrase that would encapsulate a communicative and friendly AI.
