FIFA NFTs have only generated $2.4 million in trading volume since their launch in Algorand last September.
In collaboration with blockchain firm Modex, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the organization that governs international soccer competitions, will launch its nonfungible token (NFT) collection ahead of the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
According to the Dec. 11 announcement, an inaugural collection of 100 NFTs will be released on Dec. 15 with the opportunity to win tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. In addition, 900 other digital collectibles, including memorable moments from the ongoing tournament and digital versions of memorabilia, will be released on the Polygon network and OpenSea this month.
“The FIFA Club World Cup is set to begin in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on December 12 and features seven of the best football teams in the world.” All six confederations’ champions are taking part, according to FIFA. FIFA+ Collect, the platform bearing FIFA’s name, will have the NFTs available. Algorand powers the NFT platform, which launched in September 2022.
According to Modex CEO Francesco Abbate, “Digital collectibles increase the ways in which fans can interact with their favorite players, teams, and the game they love. We are honored to assist FIFA in achieving this goal.”
With 909,255 digital collectibles minted and 16,448 holders, the FIFA+ Collect platform has facilitated 11 NFT drops since its launch. The platform has recorded trading volume in both primary and secondary NFT markets totaling $2.4 million. FIFA+ Collect Info claims that “Mint Volume can be misleading as it cannot distinguish the packs obtained for free in challenges from the packs purchased with USDC.”
FIFA’s entry into the world of NFTs marks a significant milestone in the ongoing convergence of sports and Web3 technology. This initiative presents an exciting opportunity for fans to deepen their connection with the sport while paving the way for new models of engagement and revenue generation. As FIFA navigates the challenges ahead, its commitment to accessibility, environmental responsibility, and robust security protocols will be crucial for ensuring the long-term success of this groundbreaking venture.
