Fantasy sports blockchain platform Sorare has announced its transition from Ethereum to Solana, calling the move an “upgrade” rather than a replacement. Despite the migration, CEO Nicolas Julia emphasized that the company remains confident in Ethereum’s long-term potential.
The shift comes after six years on Ethereum, with Sorare aiming to take advantage of Solana’s faster transaction speeds, lower costs, and consumer-oriented ecosystem. Over 10 sports games and their NFT trading cards will soon be powered by Solana’s network, with the migration expected to finish by the end of this month.
Julia explained that Solana currently leads the fantasy sports crypto space in terms of user activity, developer engagement, and total value locked. While he acknowledged that Solana is somewhat more centralized than Ethereum, he credited its team for focusing on scalability and consistent performance improvements.
Even after the switch, Sorare plans to maintain Ethereum integrations through the Base network and will continue to accept ETH deposits. Julia said the company remains “very bullish” on Ethereum’s ecosystem.
Founded in 2018, Sorare now boasts over 5 million users and was valued at $4.3 billion in 2021. It allows fans to collect and trade officially licensed digital cards of football, basketball, and baseball players, which can be used in fantasy tournaments for real-world rewards.
Other major platforms like 1inch and The Graph have also made similar moves to Solana in pursuit of better scalability. Meanwhile, Sorare intends to adopt a multichain approach, integrating tools like Layer0 to support seamless transactions across Solana and Base.
Julia also mentioned the team is monitoring other high-performance blockchains such as Sui and Aptos, keeping options open as the Web3 gaming and sports ecosystem continues to evolve.
While Solana has faced occasional network outages, Sorare’s CEO expressed confidence in its recent stability improvements and the strength of its development community.
The broader sports crypto token market has seen a slowdown since its 2021 peak, currently sitting around $1.17 billion in market cap. However, Sorare’s daily NFT sales remain consistent, suggesting a steady and loyal user base despite market fluctuations.
