Anza, a blockchain infrastructure startup spun out of Solana Labs, announced Alpenglow, a breakthrough consensus protocol that aims to greatly improve the Solana network’s speed.
Alpenglow introduces two core components: Votor, a new voting and block finalization mechanism, and Rotor, a data dissemination protocol designed to replace Solana’s existing Proof-of-History system. This innovative approach seeks to reduce block finality times to approximately 150 milliseconds, positioning Solana to rival traditional internet infrastructure in terms of responsiveness.

The Votor protocol enhances block finalization by employing a dual-path voting system. It intends to conclude blocks in a single round when 80% of the stakeholder base participates, and in two rounds if just 60% respond. This concurrent operation of two voting modes ensures that finalization occurs as soon as the faster path concludes, leading to unprecedented finalization latency and improved performance under challenging network conditions.
Rotor builds upon Solana’s Turbine protocol by optimizing block propagation efficiency through single-layer relay nodes and staking-based bandwidth optimization. Utilizing erasure coding technology, Rotor ensures rapid block data distribution and reconstruction from partial data fragments, further enhancing the network’s performance and stability.
Despite these enhancements, Anza concedes that Alpenglow will not completely eradicate Solana’s previous network disruptions. Currently, Solana relies on a single production-ready client, Agave, which means that any security flaw in Agave can interrupt the entire network. However, the upcoming launch of an independent validator client called Firedancer later this year is expected to provide client diversification, enhancing the network’s resilience.
In summary, Alpenglow represents a significant evolution in Solana’s consensus mechanism, aiming to deliver Web2-level speed and reliability to the blockchain. While it addresses several performance challenges, the introduction of multiple validator clients will be crucial in ensuring the network’s robustness and long-term success.
