Crypto exchange Gemini is reportedly preparing to enter the prediction market space, awaiting approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for a new derivatives exchange — a move that could position the company alongside established players like Kalshi and Polymarket.
Gemini’s Next Strategic Expansion
According to a Bloomberg report, Gemini intends to roll out a regulated platform for trading event-based contracts once it receives the green light from the CFTC.
If approved, the platform — expected to operate as a designated contract market — will allow participants to speculate on the outcomes of political, economic, and sporting events.
The firm, founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, aims to expand its footprint beyond cryptocurrency spot trading by offering financial forecasting tools tied to real-world events.
However, regulatory progress has slowed due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, which has delayed several CFTC reviews, including Gemini’s pending application.
Competing in a Growing Market
Gemini’s entry would place it in direct competition with Kalshi, currently licensed by the CFTC, and Polymarket, which is gradually re-establishing its U.S. presence after previous regulatory settlements.
Other firms such as Robinhood have opted to collaborate with Kalshi instead of seeking their own exchange approvals.
If approved, Gemini’s regulated approach could help it stand out in a sector still grappling with compliance uncertainty.
Post-IPO Diversification
This initiative follows Gemini’s September 2025 initial public offering (IPO), where the company revealed its strategy to diversify into event-driven financial products.
Despite its shares currently trading around 40% below the IPO price, market analysts believe the expansion into prediction markets could serve as a key growth driver in the post-IPO phase.
The move mirrors a larger trend across both crypto and traditional finance, with platforms like Coinbase outlining plans for event contracts under its “Everything Exchange” vision. Meanwhile, traditional exchanges such as CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) are exploring similar opportunities.
A Compliance-First Advantage
Gemini’s reputation for strict regulatory compliance — reinforced by its New York BitLicense — could provide a competitive edge in building trust and credibility among retail and institutional users.
While the timeline for launch remains uncertain, analysts suggest that once approved, Gemini’s platform could accelerate mainstream adoption of regulated prediction markets, blending crypto innovation with traditional financial oversight.
