Indian Railways has partnered with Chaincode Consulting to introduce NFT-based train tickets for the MahaKumbh Mela, a major Hindu festival held once every 144 years. These tickets will leverage the Polygon blockchain, chosen for its high scalability, fast processing, and low gas fees.

Chaincode Consulting announced the collaboration on January 13, highlighting that the initiative aims to digitize the pilgrimage experience for millions of travelers. The NFTs will be minted on Polygon and accessible through the NFTtrace platform, which manages real-world asset traceability.

Alok Gupta, CEO of Chaincode Consulting, emphasized the significance of blending blockchain technology with India’s cultural traditions. He stated that the partnership enables a “digital-first experience” while preserving the spiritual essence of the MahaKumbh.

Indian Railways handles over 1.2 million train bookings daily via its IRCTC website, and the NFT initiative seeks to attract global attention. Kumbh Mela, a related event held every 12 years and recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, has seen notable international figures like Richard Gere, David Lynch, and the Dalai Lama attend.

Additionally, Laurene Jobs, widow of Steve Jobs, is expected to visit the 2025 MahaKumbh, as reported by the Times of India.

This is not Indian Railways’ first NFT initiative. In March 2024, during the Hindu festival of Holi, the organization launched a limited-time NFT-based ticket campaign, celebrating the cultural heritage of cities like Lucknow and Delhi.

The NFTs are not just collectibles but also serve as verifiable records on the blockchain, accessible to both the public and authorities.

Previously, Indian Railways employed the Hyperledger blockchain for ticketing records and used smart contracts to enhance traceability. These efforts underscore India’s growing interest in blockchain and NFT applications for cultural and logistical innovations.
