Ethereum developers and leaders of prominent Layer 2 networks have expressed strong support for “based” and “native” rollups. These scaling solutions aim to enhance Ethereum’s security and interoperability while reducing fragmentation across the ecosystem.
In an interview with Ethereum founders and developers on January 25, Jesse Pollak, the head of Ethereum layer 2 Base, stated that based rollups are “a versatile and potent tool that we’re going to be able to use for Base to make it more connected to Ethereum and increase the security guarantees that it provides.”
Based rollups, proposed by Ethereum core developer Justin Drake, decentralize the block-building process by returning it to the base layer. This means that all Ethereum validators participate in confirming transactions rather than relying on a single centralized sorter. This approach is expected to significantly improve security and reduce the risk of censorship.
Native rollups, on the other hand, enhance the way transactions are executed on the base layer, making the network more composable. This means that transactions on different Layer 2 networks can interact more seamlessly, creating a more unified and interconnected ecosystem.
Several leading Layer 2 networks, including Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, have expressed their willingness to adopt these new scaling solutions. This collaborative approach signals a significant shift towards a more unified and secure Ethereum ecosystem.
While the implementation of based and native rollups may take some time, the strong support from both Ethereum developers and Layer 2 leaders suggests that these scaling solutions will play a crucial role in the future of the Ethereum ecosystem.
