Just a day after President Donald Trump sought to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, the first Black woman in the Fed’s 111-year history, global markets, including crypto, went into chaos. The U.S. dollar weakened and digital assets faced significant turbulence, highlighting worries about White House interference in the central bank’s independence.
Flash Crash Hits Crypto
Bitcoin suddenly dropped $4,000 within minutes, falling below $110,000 for the first time since early July. This rapid selloff wiped out $100 billion across the broader $4 trillion crypto market, according to multiple reports. Analysts described the event as a classic flash crash, driven by institutional selling.
Trump’s Strategic Bitcoin Reserve At Risk
Ironically, the President’s move against the Fed threatens one of his key crypto initiatives. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order to create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, calling BTC “digital gold” and transferring government-seized coins into a sovereign holding. With about 200,000 to 207,000 bitcoins, worth around $17 billion at the time of launch, the U.S. became the largest known state holder of BTC.
However, the strength of this reserve relies on market trust, institutional credibility, and monetary stability, all of which depend on the Fed’s independence. Weakening that independence could undermine the very confidence that gives a Bitcoin reserve value.
Legal and Constitutional Uncertainty
Governor Cook has disputed the President’s claim of cause for removal and has hired attorney Abbe Lowell to challenge the decision. Under the Federal Reserve Act, governors can only be removed for actual misconduct or corruption, not for differing policy views. Legal experts expect this dispute to escalate to the Supreme Court, leading to a prolonged period of uncertainty.
If Trump succeeds, he could achieve a 4–3 majority of appointees on the Fed board, allowing the White House to directly influence monetary policy. Markets fear this shift would set a precedent of political control over the Fed, a scenario that has historically destabilized economies.
Crypto Industry’s Dilemma
Trump has vowed to make the U.S. the crypto capital of the world, supporting initiatives like the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and efforts to ease regulatory pressures. Yet, crypto adoption also requires institutional trust and stable governance. Undermining the Fed’s independence threatens both.
