Three teenagers allegedly kidnapped a man at gunpoint after he returned home from hosting a cryptocurrency event downtown. According to police, the suspects forced the man into a vehicle and drove him an hour into the desert, where they coerced him into handing over access to his crypto wallets and NFT holdings, draining a staggering $4 million in digital assets.
The situation turned more dire when the teens allegedly threatened the man’s life, telling him he wouldn’t “live to see another day” unless he complied. One of them claimed they had his father and would kill him if he didn’t cooperate.
According to a May 10 report by 8 News Now, the victim also heard a fourth person speaking on a phone call via speakerphone during the ordeal, suggesting someone else may have been orchestrating or guiding the crime remotely.
Once the attackers had emptied his accounts, they left the man in the desert. He reportedly walked five miles through the barren landscape to reach a gas station, where he managed to call a friend for help.
In Florida, two 16-year-olds have been charged with robbery, kidnapping, and extortion. One is in jail on a $4 million bond, while the other is under house arrest and electronic monitoring. A third suspect, believed to be part of the plot, has left the country, prosecutors say. All three are set to be tried as adults, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June.
Commenting on the case, digital asset attorney Sasha Hodder said on X (formerly Twitter), “Crypto theft is evolving. It’s no longer only about social engineering or SIM swaps.”
