Samsung is gearing up to enter the extended reality (XR) space with its first XR headset. While the consumer launch is slated for March 2025, developers eager to get their hands on the device might not have to wait that long. This timeline suggests Samsung is aiming for a competitive launch, potentially arriving almost a year after Apple’s foray into the XR market with their spatial computer, Vision Pro, which debuted in February 2024.
The details about the developer version are scarce, but leaks hint at some exciting features. The XR headset is rumored to boast micro OLED screens for high-resolution visuals, alongside hand and eye tracking capabilities. Some reports even suggest the inclusion of AI features, although the specifics remain under wraps.
This partnership with Google and Qualcomm positions Samsung strategically. Google’s Android XR operating system will power the device, potentially making it the first smart glasses to run on Google’s AR platform. Qualcomm, a leader in mobile chipsets, is likely providing the processing power needed to run complex XR applications.
The early access for developers in October 2024 signifies Samsung’s intent to create a robust ecosystem for its XR platform. Developers can utilize this period to create immersive experiences and applications tailored for the headset, potentially laying the groundwork for a thriving marketplace upon consumer launch in March 2025.
Samsung’s entry into the XR space is a significant development for the industry. With established players like Apple and upcoming competitors like Samsung, the XR market is poised for a surge in innovation and competition. This could ultimately benefit consumers by leading to a wider variety of XR devices at potentially more competitive prices.
