Founded in 2017 by Oxford University professors, Oxford Semantic Technologies boasts expertise in knowledge graphs – a type of database that stores information in an interconnected web of ideas and entities. This structure allows for faster information retrieval and more relevant recommendations, mimicking how humans process and understand information.
The company’s flagship product, RDFox, is known as the world’s fastest knowledge graph and semantic reasoning engine. Samsung has been collaborating with Oxford Semantic Technologies on various projects since 2018, including investments through Samsung Ventures. This acquisition signifies a strategic move to secure the technology for in-house development.
Samsung’s vision is to leverage Oxford Semantic Technologies’ knowledge graphs to create personalized experiences for users. These graphs can integrate information and context scattered across different services and apps on Samsung devices. By understanding user preferences and usage patterns, Samsung can tailor content and recommendations, creating a more user-friendly experience.
The applications of this technology are expected to extend across Samsung’s product portfolio, encompassing mobile phones, televisions, and even home appliances. Intelligent assistants and intuitive user interfaces are potential areas where knowledge graphs can significantly improve user interactions.
