In an era where debt is ballooning and economic certainty is vanishing, billionaire investor Ray Dalio is urging a bold shift in portfolio strategy — and the spotlight is on Bitcoin and gold.
Appearing on the Master Investor Podcast, the Bridgewater Associates founder dropped a game changing suggestion: allocate 15 percent of your investments into store of value assets like Bitcoin or gold to weather what he calls a debt doom loop engulfing the United States.
“If you want the best return to risk ratio, gold and Bitcoin deserve a slice of your portfolio,” Dalio stated. His recommendation marks a dramatic pivot from his 2022 advice, when he suggested just a 1 to 2 percent allocation in Bitcoin.
Dalio admits he owns “some Bitcoin, but not much,” still showing a preference for gold. But the key message is loud and clear — diversification is no longer optional in today’s volatile climate.
The urgency of Dalio’s words is backed by data. The US national debt has now swelled to a staggering 36.7 trillion dollars, and the Treasury is projecting another trillion in borrowing just in the third quarter alone. That number is 450 billion dollars more than they expected just months ago.

This debt spiral means more currency devaluation, and Dalio believes hard assets are the only reliable defense. And it is not just America. Dalio warned that the United Kingdom and other Western economies are caught in the same downward spiral of borrowing and inflation.
Despite endorsing Bitcoin as a modern hedge, Dalio remains cautious about its long term role. He doubts any central bank will adopt it as a reserve currency, citing concerns around its transparency and potential code vulnerabilities.
But in the short term, Bitcoin is booming. Trading at over 118,000 dollars, it sits just 4 percent below its all time high. Gold, too, continues to sparkle with repeated record breaking performances.
As inflation pressures rise and fiscal alarms blare, Dalio’s advice is clear — turn to hard money. Because when the economy wobbles, Bitcoin and gold are not just assets — they are lifeboats.
