OpenAI co-founder John Schulman has departed from the company led by Sam Altman to join rival AI firm Anthropic. This significant move was announced by Schulman himself on social media platform X, where he expressed his desire to deepen his focus on AI alignment and embark on a new career chapter involving hands-on technical work.

Schulman’s departure comes amidst a series of high-profile exits from OpenAI. The company’s President and co-founder, Greg Brockman, has also announced a sabbatical until the end of the year. Additionally, Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year, has also left the organization.
These departures follow the reassignment of AI safety leader Aleksander Madry to a different role in July and the departure of chief scientist Ilya Sutskever in May. Another founding member, Andrej Karpathy, left OpenAI in February and subsequently launched an AI-integrated education platform.
The news of Schulman’s departure has sparked conversations about the ongoing talent shift within the AI industry and the competitive landscape between OpenAI and its rivals.
