In a major development for the European cryptocurrency industry, leading exchanges OKX and Crypto.com have secured full licenses under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This regulatory approval, granted on January 27, 2025, by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), empowers both platforms to provide a wide range of crypto services across the European Economic Area (EEA).
OKX stated on Jan. 27 that it had gotten its complete MiCA license through its dedicated crypto hub in Malta, while Crypto.com received its full MiCA license on the same day.
The MiCA license marks a significant milestone for OKX and Crypto.com, enabling them to seamlessly offer their services to over 400 million potential users across 30 EEA markets. This achievement is particularly noteworthy for OKX, as it positions them as one of the first global crypto platforms to receive a full MiCA license.
A major benefit of the MiCA license is its “passporting” feature. This allows OKX and Crypto.com to leverage their licenses to operate across all EU nations under a unified regulatory framework. This streamlines crypto access for European users and eliminates the need for separate licenses in each country.
For users in the EEA, this translates to greater access to regulated crypto services from reputable providers. OKX, for instance, plans to offer a variety of services, including spot trading, over-the-counter (OTC) trading, and bot trading for a wide range of cryptocurrencies. Crypto.com has also indicated that it will provide a comprehensive suite of crypto services to the European market.
The broader impact of OKX and Crypto.com’s MiCA licenses extends beyond facilitating user access. This regulatory approval is a significant step forward for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole. It signifies a growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies by European regulators and paves the way for further institutional adoption within the region. With MiCA establishing a harmonized framework, Europe is poised to emerge as a major hub for blockchain innovation and development.
