On May 12, a Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed company announced that it had purchased 1,241 Bitcoins for approximately 14.8 million yen (around $101,843 USD) each.
The Tokyo-listed firm added 1,241 Bitcoin to its treasury in a single tranche, paying about ¥14.8 million (approximately $101,843) per coin—its highest ever purchase price—injecting $129 million into its coffers in one move. Metaplanet began amassing Bitcoin in April 2024 and has steadily increased the size of its buys: six purchases in March totaling 18,925 BTC, four in April totaling 18,586 BTC, and the recent 5,555 Bitcoin on May 7 purchases, each outstripping the last.

By contrast, El Salvador—celebrated as the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender—holds 6,714 BTC valued at about $642 million, according to its National Bitcoin Office. Metaplanet’s aggressive acquisition has made it Asia’s largest corporate holder and the ninth largest globally, according to BiTBO’s treasury database.
In addition to the raw data, Metaplanet reports a Bitcoin Yield of 38% for the current quarter, up from 95.6% in Q1 2025. This indicates strong returns for shareholders that are directly linked to the company’s cryptocurrency strategy.
