Metaplanet, a Japanese investment business, has once again made news for its aggressive Bitcoin purchase strategy. On May 19, the business announced the purchase of 1,004 BTC for approximately $104.6 million, making it the second-largest single Bitcoin purchase to date. With this purchase, Metaplanet now has 7,800 BTC in total, which is worth about $807 million at today’s market value.
This move follows a previous purchase on May 12, where Metaplanet acquired 1,241 BTC for $129 million, surpassing the Bitcoin holdings of El Salvador. With these acquisitions, Metaplanet now holds the largest amount of Bitcoin among public companies in Asia and ranks tenth globally, according to BiTBO data.
Metaplanet’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, has been vocal about the company’s Bitcoin strategy, aiming to accumulate 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and 21,000 BTC by 2026. The firm’s aggressive approach has been reflected in its BTC Yield—a metric measuring the percentage change in Bitcoin holdings per fully diluted share, which stood at 95.6% in the first quarter and 47.8% through the second quarter.
The company’s recent purchases have been strategically timed, capitalizing on Bitcoin’s price movements. With Bitcoin trading near its all-time high, Metaplanet’s acquisitions demonstrate confidence in the cryptocurrency’s long-term value. If the firm acquires an additional 301 BTC, it will surpass Galaxy Digital Holdings, which currently holds 8,100 BTC, moving Metaplanet up in the rankings of corporate Bitcoin holders.
