In a first for India, a school in Kerala has embraced artificial intelligence in the classroom with the introduction of Iris, a generative AI teacher. Developed through a collaboration between the Atal Tinkering Lab, MakerLabs Edutech, and KTCT Higher Secondary School, Iris marks a significant step towards revolutionizing education.
This AI-powered teacher isn’t just another computer program. Iris boasts the capability to interact with students, respond to questions, and even explain complex concepts in multiple languages. This has led to a surge in student curiosity and a remarkable achievement – zero absenteeism in Iris’s class!
The success of Iris stems from the innovative use of generative AI. This technology allows Iris to tailor its teaching approach to each student’s needs, providing a more personalized learning experience. Additionally, Iris can access and process vast amounts of information, enabling it to answer student inquiries comprehensively and keep its curriculum updated.
While Iris signifies a groundbreaking advancement, it’s important to remember that it’s not intended to replace human teachers entirely. Instead, Iris serves as a valuable supplement, assisting educators in creating a more engaging and interactive learning environment. Human teachers can leverage Iris’s capabilities to personalize lessons, provide additional support to struggling students, and free up their time for more complex tasks like mentoring and emotional guidance.
The introduction of Iris has sparked a wave of interest in the potential of AI for education. As technology continues to develop, we can expect to see even more innovative applications emerge, transforming classrooms and shaping the future of learning for students around the world.
