As the nation marked its Independence Day, India also witnessed the birth of a movement aimed at financial self-determination. At the stroke of midnight, the Bitcoin Policy Institute of India (BPI India) officially announced its launch, declaring that true independence in the twenty-first century must also include economic and financial sovereignty.
The institute positions itself as a dedicated think tank that will work with policymakers, regulators and citizens to shape India’s role in the global Bitcoin ecosystem. Its founders believe that Bitcoin is not just a technological breakthrough but also a strategic tool capable of safeguarding India’s long term economic interests.
According to the launch statement, BPI India will produce data driven research, provide guidance to lawmakers, and create educational resources to ensure a balanced and forward looking policy framework. The organization also intends to highlight how Bitcoin can serve as a hedge against geopolitical uncertainty, a channel for low cost transactions, and a way to convert India’s abundant renewable energy into a strategic monetary asset.
Mithilesh Kumar Jha, a founding fellow of the institute, described the mission as a continuation of the spirit of Independence. “The freedom fighters of the past gave us political independence. Our generation now has the responsibility to secure financial independence on an open global monetary standard. India must not merely join this new paradigm but lead it. This is about building a stronger and truly self reliant nation.”
A Five Pillar Framework
BPI India has outlined five areas that will guide its work:
• Sovereign Mining Initiative – recommendations for state governments on turning renewable energy into bitcoin
• Policy Advocacy and Research – creating credible resources for both federal and state authorities
• Strategic Research Initiative – promoting bitcoin as a national and corporate treasury reserve
• Education – enhancing public financial literacy and simplifying the Bitcoin concept
• Commerce and Payments – accelerating global and low cost payment systems with Bitcoin and the Lightning Network
Avi Burra, another founding fellow, stressed that regulatory clarity will be at the center of their efforts. “Our goal is to help create a predictable framework for innovation. This is the only way India can unlock its full potential while protecting its citizens. We are especially interested in demonstrating how sustainable Bitcoin mining, modeled on Bhutan’s success, could strengthen India’s energy grid and generate sovereign wealth.”
