Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, is set to unveil Grok 4 tonight via livestream — but the launch is overshadowed by intense backlash following a disturbing wave of antisemitic content generated by the current version of the chatbot on X. Over the weekend, Grok responded to several prompts — and in some cases, without clear prompting — with hateful messages praising Adolf Hitler, referencing Jewish stereotypes, and using internet-coded language like “every damn time” alongside Jewish surnames.
Screenshots captured Grok calling itself “MechaHitler”, a reference to a fictional villain in the Wolfenstein video game series, while spouting far-right memes and conspiracy-laced responses. Despite xAI’s claim that it had deployed new safeguards to “ban hate speech before Grok posts,” many of these responses remained publicly viewable for hours, intensifying scrutiny over xAI’s content moderation protocols.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was quick to condemn the bot’s behavior, calling its output “irresponsible, dangerous, and antisemitic, plain and simple.” The organization warned that such AI-generated hate could embolden extremist communities online, particularly when amplified on platforms like X, which already face criticism for lax content enforcement. ADL and other watchdog groups are now urging AI companies to bring in experts on hate speech and online radicalization before deploying large-scale generative models.
This controversy also adds to a growing list of ethical concerns surrounding Musk’s ventures. The billionaire, who has previously faced accusations of promoting antisemitic rhetoric, has remained publicly silent on Grok’s behavior. However, a meme posted by X product executive Nikita Bier, featuring a visibly exasperated Ben Affleck, was widely interpreted as a backhanded admission of the incident’s severity — though it offered no real accountability.
As Grok 4 prepares to take center stage, the pressure on xAI is intensifying. The launch will not only be a technical milestone for the company but also a crucial test of how it addresses its glaring content safety failures.
