The upcoming G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, is expected to address North Korea’s escalating cyberattacks and cryptocurrency thefts, according to a Bloomberg report. These illicit activities have become a significant concern for global security and financial stability. North Korean-affiliated hacker groups, such as the Lazarus Group, have been linked to several high-profile crypto heists, including the $1.4 billion breach of the Bybit exchange in February 2025, marking the largest crypto theft in history.
In 2024 alone, North Korean hackers were responsible for stealing over $1.3 billion through 47 separate incidents, accounting for a substantial portion of global crypto thefts that year. The stolen funds are believed to finance the regime’s nuclear and missile programs, circumventing international sanctions and posing a significant threat to regional and global security.

The G7 leaders are anticipated to discuss coordinated international responses to these cyber threats, emphasizing the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and collaboration among nations to combat North Korea’s malicious activities. The summit’s focus on this issue underscores the growing recognition of cybercrime’s impact on global peace and stability.
