Elon Musk has revealed that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, will soon roll out the first beta version of “Grokipedia”, an AI-powered knowledge platform designed to rival Wikipedia. The early beta release, titled “Version 0.1,” is expected to go live within the next two weeks, according to Musk’s latest update on X (formerly Twitter).
A New Approach to Knowledge Sharing
First announced on September 30, Musk described Grokipedia as a major leap forward compared to existing online encyclopedias. He stated that the project aims to become “a significant step toward xAI’s broader goal of understanding the universe.”
While technical details remain limited, Musk has previously said the platform will be open source, allowing public contributions to a global knowledge database. The concept was reportedly conceived during a live discussion at The All-In Podcast Summit, where Musk explained how xAI’s chatbot Grok analyzes multiple information sources—such as Wikipedia entries, PDFs, and online documents—to assess their accuracy and completeness.
During that conversation, David Sacks, co-host of the podcast, suggested turning this verification system into a standalone product. Musk responded that he would consult his team about building it, eventually leading to the creation of Grokipedia.
Musk’s History of Criticism Toward Wikipedia
Musk’s decision to launch Grokipedia follows years of public criticism toward Wikipedia. He has accused the platform of bias, inconsistent moderation, and spreading misinformation.
In a well-publicized remark in October 2023, Musk joked that he would donate $1 billion if Wikipedia changed its name to “Dikipedia,” referencing what he called its ideological leanings. More recently, he echoed this sentiment in response to a post claiming Wikipedia was a “massive psyop,” underscoring his ongoing skepticism toward the platform’s editorial standards.
