El Salvador is setting the stage for a potential shake-up in its financial sector with plans to launch banks dedicated entirely to Bitcoin. Announced through a post on X, the initiative aligns with President Nayib Bukele’s vision of making Bitcoin a central pillar of the nation’s economy. While details remain under wraps, the move could redefine how citizens access loans, deposits, and investments all in BTC.
The proposal may draw from Bukele’s earlier concept of a Bank for Private Investment, designed to operate with fewer restrictions than traditional institutions. Advocates believe Bitcoin banks could drive growth, attract global investors, and provide financial access to the 70 percent of citizens currently without bank accounts. Critics, however, point to Bitcoin’s volatility and the concerns raised by the IMF over consumer protection.
Since adopting Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, El Salvador has launched projects ranging from a state-backed digital wallet to geothermal Bitcoin mining. Whether this latest plan follows the previous BPI model or introduces a fresh framework is still unknown, but the nation’s intent to deepen its Bitcoin integration is undeniable.
