Crypto hackers have devised a new tactic in their arsenal of scams, leveraging fake job offers to infect victims with malicious software. This sophisticated method, uncovered by cybersecurity researchers at Trend Micro, involves a multi-stage attack that begins with seemingly legitimate job offers in the cryptocurrency industry.

The scam operates by sending emails that appear to be from reputable companies, inviting recipients to interviews for cryptocurrency-related positions. These emails often include links to fake interview scheduling platforms or websites. Clicking on these links triggers the download and installation of a malicious loader, the first stage of the attack.
This loader then proceeds to download and install the main payload, a modified version of the Stealerium malware known as “Enigma.” Enigma is a potent information-stealing tool capable of capturing sensitive data such as system information, browser cookies, cryptocurrency wallet information, and even clipboard content.
The hackers behind this campaign believed to be based in Russia, have demonstrated a high level of sophistication in their operations. They have employed advanced techniques to evade detection by security software and have targeted individuals working in the cryptocurrency industry, who are likely to have valuable digital assets.
This new development highlights the evolving tactics of cybercriminals, who are constantly adapting to new technologies and exploiting vulnerabilities to carry out their malicious activities. Individuals and organizations alike are urged to exercise caution when encountering unsolicited job offers, especially those related to the cryptocurrency industry.
