ByteDance, the owner of the popular video platform TikTok, is collaborating with US chip designer Broadcom to develop an advanced AI processor. This partnership comes amidst ongoing tensions between the US and China.
The chip, built on a 5 nanometer (nm) process, will be a customized application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed specifically for ByteDance’s needs. This customization ensures the chip is optimized for ByteDance’s AI workloads, potentially leading to improved performance and efficiency.
To comply with US export restrictions, manufacturing will likely be outsourced to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker. This decision ensures the chip adheres to US regulations while leveraging TSMC’s advanced manufacturing capabilities.
The collaboration isn’t entirely new. ByteDance has reportedly purchased AI-related chips from Broadcom in the past, suggesting a growing relationship between the two companies. This new project signifies a deeper partnership driven by ByteDance’s strategic push for self-sufficiency in high-end AI chips.
The impetus for this move likely stems from the US’s restrictions on chip exports to China, which have threatened the supply chain for Chinese tech giants like ByteDance. By developing its own custom chip, ByteDance aims to mitigate these risks and secure a steady supply of critical components for its AI endeavors.
Beyond supply chain security, the new chip holds the potential to empower ByteDance’s AI ambitions. The company has been actively investing in generative AI, a field focused on creating new content, like text or images. This custom chip could accelerate the development and deployment of such AI models, potentially leading to new features and functionalities within ByteDance’s products.
However, this collaboration also raises questions. The increasing focus on custom AI chips could lead to a more fragmented technological landscape, where companies develop specialized hardware incompatible with others. Additionally, the ethical implications of powerful AI technology in the hands of private companies remain a topic of discussion.
